The Art Gallery of Sudbury | Galerie d’art de Sudbury is a place for everyone to discover art, experience art, and create art. For over 50 years, the Gallery has been a gathering place for the community. Even during COVID-19 and through multiple lockdowns, we served 9,318 participants in-person and 13,390 persons online.
However: We HAVE to move.
Our current location is not accessible and must move out of public service at the end of 2024. Our collections are stressed by space and facility limitations and can only grow in a new Category A museum storage space.
A Gallery on the move
Over the next five years, the Art Gallery of Sudbury | Galerie d’art de Sudbury will change state. We will move from imagining our future in a new state-of-the-art building in downtown Sudbury, to building and opening a new and inspired Art Gallery of Sudbury | Galerie d’art de Sudbury in our new home at Junction East.
The new location for the Art Gallery of Sudbury will provide universal accessibility for visitors, more efficient display space, and museum-quality conditions for the storage and display of artwork.
We began this journey in 2010, but our dream took flight in 2016 when we began working collaboratively with the Greater Sudbury Public Library and the City of Greater Sudbury. The project took on its shape and form when we connected with our community, and we so are excited by the prospect of bringing forward new galleries to tell the stories of Indigenous, Francophone, and New Canadian communities of our region through art.
The $2 million capital campaign will support this once-in-a-lifetime endeavour and allow the Gallery to deliver on its mission in ways that right now, it can only imagine.
The Art Gallery of Sudbury | Galerie d’art de Sudbury has committed to providing $2 million dollars towards the costs of building Junction East.
The capital campaign will also support specialized equipment to house collections to Category A standards and to increase access to the art stories of our communities. It is a place for everyone to discover, experience, and create art.
We will be pleased to review the naming opportunities for this project. All gifts of $1,000 or more will be recognized on a donor recognition wall in the new Art Gallery. With your financial support, we will be able to imagine a new Art Gallery of Sudbury | Galerie d’art de Sudbury where all are welcome.
With your support we will:
- Build the leading art gallery in northeastern Ontario.
- Provide museum-quality storage for our collections.
- Expand art education programming in our community.
- Celebrate the artistic heritage of our Indigenous and Francophone communities.
- Nourish artistic endeavours in our community.
- Invite the world to learn, create, build, and explore art.
