Curatorial Statement | We Live Up Here

In this nostalgic photography installation, Braeden investigates ghost murals scattered throughout Sudbury. These historic, faded pieces that so often hide in plain sight testify to the passage of time, preserving the essence of bygone eras.

Drawing from his background in architecture and his passion for photography, Braeden masterfully captures the intricate interplay between urban architecture and the echoes of history. Each carefully composed photograph serves as a window to the past, and a reflection of the present. You’ll immerse yourself in the nostalgia of Sudbury’s rich heritage.

The project, presented in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Sudbury, unearths the treasured artifacts of a city’s visual memory—the Grand Theatre, the retro Roy’s Furniture stripes, Desrosiers Dry Goods, and others that have withstood the test of time. Through Braeden’s work, these ghost murals come alive once more, resonating with the pulse of contemporary urban life.

Artist Bio | Braeden Martel

Photographer from the bushes of Chapleau seeks out the smoking city of Sudbury. Over the
last three years, Braedan has captured architecture and urban life through photography. His
work documents the history of architecture in Sudbury and its relationship on the natural
and cultural landscape. When not snapping photos, Braeden trades his camera for a cup of
coffee and sketchbook.
